BITTER, TAKES ITS TOLL

Smiling faces of the past,
soft words are all gone,
they had hoped love would last,
time has proven them wrong.

Not much is spoken today,
beyond, please pass the bread,
never thought it could get this way,
it's better than yelling instead.

Long hard times make it tough,
to have energy to care,
it wasn't always so rough,
there was once love to share.

Now there are no views expressed,
no comments any more either,
no opinions given or asked for,
nothing beyond, please pass the bread.

Days come and days go by,
it is silent and quite sad,
no one cares to ask why,
all that was good is now bad.

And across this land of ours,
it is more common than you may realize,
for people not to talk for hours upon hours,
not with their mouths, but with bitter in their eyes.
