PAIN, AND PAIN AGAIN

Dollars to doughnuts,
this hits the spot,
I am sure it is right,
as likely as not.

For everything in your life,
that you feel bad about,
is connected to a pain,
of that there is no doubt.

Be it your smoking,
and you can't stop,
be it your weight,
that you just can't drop,
be it your job,
your boss is not nice,
be it your spouse,
who's as cold as ice.

Each pain we live with,
and do nothing about,
is connected to another,
this I want to shout.

This other pain,
which is deep inside,
is one we can't confront,
one which we always hide.

This pain keeps you,
under control of fear,
and allows you to suffer,
with the pain that is here.

A person does not feel well,
but is afraid what it could be,
so doesn't go to the doctor,
just suffers in misery.

A person unhappy on their job,
the boss does not treat them fair,
but fear of change and unknown,
will keep them going there.

Unable to confront,
the source of our pain,
just keeps us going,
pain, and pain again.

The pain inside is imagined,
the pain each day is real,
how bad does real need to get,
how bad do you need to feel?

The fear of confronting,
what you imagine will hurt,
makes you keep hurting,
and swallowing dirt.

People will go to extremes,
to avoid the confrontation,
they will suffer endlessly,
and change the conversation.

When you can't deal with that boss,
or the love who won't treat you right,
or the neighbor whose teen,
blares the music all night.

When someone takes the parking space,
you've been waiting to get,
or someone breaks a date,
that has been all set.

For each issue,
that you let slip away,
it deepens the real pain,
the one you can't ever say.

This involves lovers, neighbors,
friends, family and your job,
anywhere can be a confrontation,
and they seem like a mob.

For each you can't deal with,
you deal with yourself instead,
you deal with the hurt and pain,
same spider, same old web.

So, fear of the imagined,
keeps you in pain today,
the longer you allow it,
the more pain you will pay.

How strong must the pain be,
before you'll confront that fear,
for it's pain and pain again,
one in your mind, one right here.
