THE MAIN LINE

Every love has a main line,
stronger than all the rest,
it could be that you like to talk,
maybe it's the way that she cooks,
maybe you guys just like to walk,
it could be his good looks.

To merely say I love someone,
covers such a vast space,
there is always a main line,
that brought you together,
perhaps it was the sex you shared,
perhaps you share a love of cars,
perhaps it is your religious beliefs,
or you like to study the stars.

Hopefully as the years go by,
that main line will lead to more,
for the more lines, that you share,
the longer you two will last,
as the main line will grow old,
it won't support the weight,
so add more lines, all the time,
do it now, before it is too late.

Protect the love that you share,
you've both worked too hard,
to allow it to slip away,
because you always felt,
the main line would never sway.

For I've seen it much too much,
where people grow apart,
the main line is allowed to rust,
and never forced to expand.

So know, that love is a job,
it does require some work,
it won't last by itself,
it takes desire and two people,
who want it to last,
and who are willing,
to replace that main line.
